Stephen Michael Holloway, 80, of Bristol, Virginia, passed away July 9, 2023. Steve was born in
Elkin, North Carolina, on May 4, 1943. He was a graduate of Elkin High School, class of 1961. In
high school, Steve was a varsity baseball, basketball, and football player. He received a degree
in Sociology from Duke University in 1965 where he played baseball and football and was a
member of Phi Delta Theta. Steve was happily married to his loving wife Diane and enjoyed
sharing more than thirty years of life with her.
Steve was a devout Christian and committed to volunteering to help others. Steve and Diane
were active members of the Pleasant View Methodist Church of Abingdon, Virginia. Steve
assisted with meal delivery and mission trips as well as other events, services, and classes.
Steve also served through the Gideons. Not content to be still during retirement, Steve was a
beloved substitute teacher in Washington County, Virginia. Steve's favorite pastimes were golf
and supporting the Duke Blue Devils.
Steve was a loving and generous husband, father, stepfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He
regularly called, emailed, and texted to communicate his love and support and was ready to
provide his assistance whenever needed. Steve loved all his dogs throughout his life and is
survived by Hannah and Annie, who will miss their walks greatly.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents Emily Lyon Holloway and Lester Cornelius Holloway,
and his brother Robert Greer Holloway.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Holloway, and his sister Lestine Holloway Hutchens (David); his
children Emily Holloway Urban (Jason) and Paul Romans (Candy); his stepchildren, Dana Whidby
(Michael), Kim Pack (Stewart), Pam Booher (Thomas), and Jason Dobbins (Robin); his
grandchildren, Erika, Luke, and Levi; and great-grandchild, Lily; and step-grandchildren
Michaela Whidby (Elliot), Madisen Whidby, Henry Pack, Simon Pack, Julia Pack, Ethan Booher,
Ava Booher, Owen Dobbins, and Cameron Dobbins. He is also survived by his nieces and
nephew Lynn Mosier (David), Greer Begbie (Doug), Beth Hutchens (John), and John David
Hutchens (Kelsey); great-nieces and nephews Memrie Mosier McConnell (Scott), David Mosier
III, Jenna Begbie, and Christopher Begbie (Nicole) and their children Luke and Piper McConnell,
Isla and Keeley Begbie, and Dashiell Hutchens.
A memorial service will be held at Pleasant View Methodist Church on Friday, July 28, at 6 p.m.
The church is located at 18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Virginia 24210. Streaming of this service

A burial service will be held at Elkin Valley Baptist Church on Saturday, August 12, at 2:00 p.m.
The church is located at 118 N. Elkin Drive, Elkin, North Carolina, 28621.
