Mr. Matthew Chatham Mayberry, 87, died Friday September 30, 2016 at Woltz Hospice Home after an extended illness.
Mr. Mayberry was born in Winston Salem, Jan 14, 1929 to Theodore P. and Louise Chatham Mayberry. He attended Elkin City Schools and graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in geology. He began his professional career with International Minerals Corp. in Bartow FL. Then moved to Maitland FL as a consulting geologist which led to his world travels as Occidental Petroleum's VP of mineral exploration. In 1982 he was invited to do geological reconnaissance in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia for four and one-half years. The last year of his life was devoted to writing a book "The Great Kalimantan Adventure", based on his journals during that period. In 2005 Matthew opened Brushy Mountain Winery with family members.
In 1959 he became a member of Subud a International spritual Association. He was a faithful member of Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry and sang in the choir.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years Anna Harris Mayberry, two sons Richard Chatham Mayberry and wife Martha Tonissen Mayberry of Pisgah Forest, NC and Theodore P. Mayberry and partner Anthony of Orlando, FL. one Grandson, John Chatham Mayberry of Saint Louis MO.
A memorial service will be held at Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2016 conducted by the
