Marjory Joan
Jarboe Roth
May 24, 1934 — Mar 28, 2025
Marjory Roth of Winston-Salem passed away on March 28, 2025. She was surrounded by her family and passed peacefully.
She was born in Ranger, Texas on May 24, 1934 to Dorothy Taggart Jarboe and James A. Jarboe, II. She was raised in Houston and Rockport, Texas and graduated from San Jacinto High School, Houston, where she played on the Women's Varsity Tennis Team. She followed in her older brothers' footsteps and attended The Rice Institute (now Rice University) where she graduated with a B.A. in English, thus starting on her long career in education. At Rice she met her future husband of 65 years Thomas M. Roth, Jr. Following their marriage she moved with him to Elkin, North Carolina. Marjory became heavily involved in the community and by 1970 had discovered her professional calling as a teacher and trainer of teachers for children with dyslexia. She trained under June Lyday Orton and Dr. Lucia Karnes and worked as teacher and tutor for dyslexic children in Elkin and Winston-Salem. In the eighties she earned the degree of Master of Educational Administration from UNC Greensboro. She also took on leadership in the field of learning disabilities as the founding President of the North Carolina Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (NCIDA); as a Fellow of the Association of Orton Gillingham Practitioners and Educators; as a long time board member of the International Multi-Sensory Language Education Council (IMSLEC); and most importantly as founder, President, and Head of School for Greenhills School, Inc. At Greenhills she pioneered a program to integrate Orton-Gillingham teaching techniques in a regular classroom setting; helping over 250 students to achieve literacy. Through Greenhills she led nationally certified teacher training programs which spread effective teaching methods for LD students widely in North Carolina.
In her free time, she enjoyed her hobbies of reading, hiking, keeping a close eye on politics and the news, and researching and studying family history and genealogy. In her younger days she was an accomplished tennis player.
Marjory was honored by the NCIDA with its June Lyday Orton award for outstanding service to the Branch, and with the Lydia Darragh Medal of the Sons of the American Revolution for her support of the SAR.
With her husband, Tom, she raised two sons, Thomas M. Roth III of Alexandria, Virginia, and James Jarboe Roth of Winston-Salem, who survive her. She is also survived by her husband; her sister, Maud DeKraker (Dave) of Greensboro, NC; her sister-in-law, Jacqueline Marie Jarboe of Texas City, Texas (widow of her brother James A. Jarboe III); her brother-in-law, William C. Roth of Elkin; her sister-in-law, Rosa Roth Beverley of Elkin; sixteen nieces and nephews; and by a numerous constellation of grand-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James A. Jarboe III and George G. Jarboe, her sister-in-law, Patsy Hockaday Jarboe (wife of George) and by her sister-in-law, Cicely Darr Roth (wife of Bill Roth).
She was marked by a strong commitment to help and support her husband and sons, her extended family members, her students, and the faculty and staff who worked with her. Although North Carolina became her primary home after her marriage, she was a proud Texan and took pride that many of her family continues to live in Texas.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 14th, at 2:00 pm at Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church, Elkin, NC, where all are welcome to celebrate her life.
The family will receive friends at the home of William C. Roth after the service at 137 Terrace Avenue.
