Laura Moore
Gwyn,
Oct 18, 1932 — Jul 14, 2018
ELKIN — Laura Ellen Moore Gwyn passed away on Saturday July 14, 2018, in her home surrounded by her family. Laura was born in Lenoir on October 18, 1932, to Glen and Coline Powell Moore. She was a devoted, loving sister of Bill Moore (Jo) and Franklin Moore (D) (Nancy). Laura lived a loving, caring and joyful life with her husband of 63 years, Tom Gwyn, Sr.
Laura was raised in Lenoir, graduated from Woman's College, lived with Tom (US Army) in Poitiers, France, and then made Elkin home in 1957, loving everyone around her. She was the true definition of a gracious lady. Laura was known for her grace, gentleness and unpretentiousness. She had a subtle manner in reaching out to assure that everyone felt loved within her family and community. Her life was her sermon. A devoted member of Elkin First United Methodist Church, she served as a kindergarten teacher, acolyte mentor and traveled with missionary teams to Mexico and Armenia. One always walked away from Laura feeling loved.
In addition to her husband, Laura is survived by her sons, Tom Gwyn, Jr. (Mary), Will Gwyn (Lori), and daughter Alice Heusel (George), and grandchildren Ashley Denny (Scott), Marshall Gwyn (Olivia), Richard Gwyn, Sarah Gwyn, Alice Gwyn and Robert Heusel (Meg). The family expresses its sincere appreciation to Mountain Valley Hospice, Ashley Church and Judy Jennings and all other caregivers for the love and attention they gave to Laura and her family.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Hawthorne Road, Elkin, conducted by Rev. Mike Shuford and Rev. Fred Jordan at 11 a.m. on Wednesday July 18. Following the service, the family looks forward to sharing memories with friends in the church fellowship hall.
