John Austin Cater Jr.

John Austin Cater Jr. of Alexander City, Alabama died peacefully of natural causes at N. Wilkesboro Hospital, on the morning of November 27, 2021.  He was 90.

John was born to John Austin and Lillian Cater in Alexander City, Alabama, on August 27, 1931 and grew up in Anniston, Alabama.  He developed his love for golf, tennis, and the Boy Scouts of America there and became an Eagle Scout.  John was on the tennis and golf teams for Anniston High School and Swanee University.  He earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics and served in the United States Navy as an engineering officer (lt. JG) onboard the Howard W. Gilmore stationed in Key West, Florida.  It was there that John Met his first wife, Anne Butler, of Houston, Texas.  They married, had two children and divorced.  Betty Waters Madden (of Anniston Alabama) and John were married in Houston, Texas in April of 1988.  Betty died in Alexander City, Alabama on May 25, 2011.  John is survived by his sons, John Austin Cater III, Daniel Garrett Cater (Robin), stepson, Bill Madden, grandsons and granddaughter John Austin Cater IV (Tori), Travis Noble Cater (Shana), Caroline Chappell Cater (Alston Mullins), and 4

great grandchildren, Carson, Owen, Emerson and Pennelope Cater.

A memorial service will be held at Radney Funeral Home Chapel in Alexander City, Alabama; January 15,2022 at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Anniston, AL In at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations made to First Baptist Church of Alexander City will be greatly appreciated.
