Bessie Jean Brown York, 92, passed away peacefully after an extended illness at Chatham Nursing and Rehab Center in Elkin.
Jean was born in Surry County March 25, 1931 to Theodore (Ted) and Avis Booker Brown. She graduated from Elkin High School and attended Pfeiffer College. She married Dewey J. York in 1950. They lived in High Point, Thomasville and North Wilkesboro before retuning to Elkin after retirement. She was an active member of Elkin Presbyterian Church as long as health permitted.
Jean was preceded in death by her Parents and her husband. Surviving are: Two Daughters, Jamye Shaw (Lyn) of Elizabethtown, NC Ellie Cook (Rudy) of of Lexington, NC. Two grandchildren Heather Mintz (Dolph) of Kinston, NC and David Shaw (Emily) of Raleigh. Four Great Grandchildren. Two Brothers, Joseph T. Brown, Jr. (Johnsie) and Abner Brown (Linda) of State Road, NC. Two Nieces and Two Nephews.
A Graveside service will be conducted at 12:00 noon Friday in Hollywood Cemetery with a Memorial Service to follow at Elkin Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Steve Snipes and Rev. Arlo Tysinger. The family will receive friends following the Memorial Service.
