James Lloyd
Poindexter
Feb 13, 1939 — Feb 11, 2026
JAMES LLOYD POINDEXTER, age 86 passed away February 11, 2026 at his home in Wilkes County.
Jim was born in Long Beach, CA to Marjorie Lloyd and Hubert Turner Poindexter the day before Valentine's Day, 1939. He was baptized in the same year, the day after Christmas.
After graduating from San Pedro High School, Jimmy enrolled at Stanford University. He later took a brief break to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve before continuing his education at Occidental College, where he was a member of the water polo team. Upon graduating from Occidental, Jim planned to attend law school. However, when his grandfather passed away unexpectedly, he was called to Elkin, North Carolina to take over the family hardware business. What was intended to be a temporary detour to the Carolinas became a lifetime. Under Jim's leadership, Surry Hardware grew from a local store into a multi-location building supply company and home center, well before the emergence of the modern big-box retailers we know today. Building on the success of the hardware business, Jim went on to an accomplished career in entrepreneurship and development. He led and participated in numerous ventures, including the development of several major real estate projects and shopping centers. He was also a founding member of Yadkin Valley Bank and Trust Company, where he served on the board of directors for decades.
Jim devoted himself tirelessly to public service, progressive politics and church life. He served as trustee and board member of many institutions including Hugh Chatham Hospital, Elkin Public Library, the Piedmont Opera and North Carolina State University. For almost a decade he was the founding director of an endeavor simply known as "the Flower Ministry" which arranged and delivered hand-made bouquets to nursing homes, hospitals, churches and home bound residents of Elkin.
Jimmy was a man of a loving and delightfully eccentric nature, whose larger-than-life personality filled every room he entered. He possessed a marvelous sense of humor, a winsome spirit, and a remarkable gift for cultivating deep and lasting friendships. Chances are, if you met Jimmy - you definitely remembered it - and he always remembered you. He is survived by his daughter, Christine Poindexter of Raleigh; his sister, Patricia Poindexter Franks of California; and by many friends from across the world to his beloved hamlet north of Elkin, where he welcomed all to Wakefield Farms. We are grateful for the beautiful witness of his life and for the legacy he leaves as a servant-leader. Jimmy will be dearly missed.
A Celebration Life will be held at 2:00 PM, February 28th at Elkin Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jimmy's honor can be made to that congregation, which he dearly loved.
