Mrs. Frances McBride Harris, 94, of Pfafftown, North Carolina, formerly of Elkin, died December 4, 2017. Mrs. Harris was born March 19, 1923 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to William Walter and Nancy Money McBride. She was graduated from Lewisville High School and then employed by Bowman Gray School of Medicine. An avid basketball player, she played for Hanes Hosiery and then Chatham Manufacturing Company where she met her future husband, Wayne "Tige" Harris. She was employed by Elkin City Schools as a secretary for N.H. Carpenter for several years. In her early fifties she returned to Surry Community College to complete her life-long dream of becoming a Registered Nurse, subsequently working at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. She was an active community volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Tri-C, and Habitat for Humanity. She was an active member of Elkin First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers William, Warren, Homer, and Paul McBride; and one infant brother. Surviving are: sons David Harris of West End and Mark Harris/wife Jo Martin of Pfafftown; step-son Tom Harris, Jr./wife Molly Barker Harris of Raleigh; three sisters Betty Groce, Nancy Warner, and Karlene Cope; grandchildren Todd Harris, Stewart Corchiani , Anna Stein, John Michael Harris , and Zachary Harris; thirteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews , special friends, and neighbors.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2017 in Hollywood Cemetery by Rev. Michael Shuford and Rev. Fred Jordan. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church, 340 Hawthorne Road, Elkin, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
