David Harley
Morrison
May 12, 1951 — Feb 17, 2021
David Harley Morrison, 69, died on the morning of February 17, 2021 at his home after an extended battle with cancer. He was born on May 12, 1951 in Morehead City, NC to John and Jean Morrison. He graduated from West Carteret High School in 1969 and from the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy in 1975. After meeting in Chapel Hill, he married Susan Johnson in 1973, and they returned to her hometown of Elkin in 1975.
David's faith in Christ was central to all he did. He was a member of Christ Community Church in Mt. Airy and was deeply committed to the Selah Men's Bible study he helped begin fifteen years ago. He actively served in and supported a variety of Christian ministries in his community and around the world.
For David, his work as a pharmacist was an extension of his faith as he sought to serve his community with the love of Christ through the care he provided. He served as a pharmacist in his community for 45 years. He and Susan bought D-Rex Pharmacy in Jonesville in 1982 and opened a second location in Yadkinville in 2018.
Through his life, David became utterly convinced of the value of education. He pursued it vigorously for himself and invested deeply in it for his family. He also worked diligently to extend educational opportunities to others. He served as a preceptor for pharmacy students to help prepare them for community pharmacy. He served on the Board of Trustees at Campbell University and on the Board of Visitors and on the Southeastern Society at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In recent years, he generously supported Southeastern's Global Theological Initiative, which seeks to equip leaders in the global church to make disciples of Jesus Christ.
David is survived by his wife Susan Morrison of Elkin, NC; children Alice Morrison of Chapel Hill, NC, Sarah Morrison of Elkin, NC, and John Morrison and wife Dori of Gainesville, GA; grandchildren James, David, and Kathryn Tolin of Chapel Hill, NC, and Jack and Caroline Morrison of Gainesville, GA; and his brother Chris Morrison and wife Karen of Morehead City, NC.
A graveside service was held on February 20 at 1:30 PM at Elkin Valley Baptist Church with a funeral to follow in the sanctuary at 2:00 PM. Due to COVID, masks and social distancing are requested.
The family offers their warmest thanks and deepest appreciation to all who have cared for, encouraged, and prayed for David and them over this past year. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the The Morrison/Johnson Global Theological Initiative fund at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, a fund established by the Morrisons to enable leaders around the world to be trained for ministry. https://www.sebts.edu/morrison-johnson-fund.aspx
